TEXAS LONGHORN CLONES, HORN SHOWCASE AND AUCTION MAKE HISTORY IN FORT WORTH

Two of the nations longest-horned cattle defended their championships and a new champion was crowned in the third annual Horn Showcase, sponsored by the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America. The public measurement was a part of a gala weekend, November 14-16, 2002, which also included the first auction of Texas Longhorn clones.

Texas Longhorn breeders and enthusiasts from throughout North America congregated in Fort Worth for the TLBAA Texas Longhorn Weekend that included the Annual General Membership Meeting, an educational seminar, an awards banquet and other social activities in addition to the measurement of the Horn Showcase entries and the inaugural Horn Showcase Auction. The cattle events were held at the Will Rogers Complex.

A historic first was recorded in the auction when four heifer calves, identical clones of the great Starlight cow, entered the ring for public bidding. The winning bid of $19,500 allowed Rex and Vicki Mosser, Midway, Texas, the daunting task of selecting their choice from among the four, which were offered by Zech Dameron III. In addition to the clones, 83 other lots were auctioned for an average of $3752. The high-selling lot at $20,000 was Delta Disco, an Emperor daughter, owned by El Coyote Ranch of Kingsville, Texas. She was also purchased by Rex and Vicki Mosser.

In the Tip-to-Tip Division, defending her championship as the longest-horned cow was Starlight, with 77.375 inches, the property of Zech Dameron III, Coppell, Texas. The bull champion, also a repeat from last year, was GF Heavy Hitter, 78.625 inches, owned by Rex and Sherese Glendenning, Celina, Texas. The ten-year-old steer, Watson 101, owned by Wes Watson of Garvin, Oklahoma, sported the longest of the long horns, at 96.125 inches.

The Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, serves members in all 50 states, Canada and seven foreign countries, and has over a quarter million head in its registry. For more information, contact the TLBAA at (817) 625-6241 or www.tlbaa.org.
